Early Life and Political Career
Ruud Lubbers was born on May 7, 1939, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He graduated from Erasmus University Rotterdam with a degree in economics and worked as a management consultant before entering politics. Lubbers joined the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party and was elected to the Dutch Parliament in 1977.
Prime Ministership (1982-1994)
Lubbers became the Netherlands' Prime Minister in 1982, succeeding Dries van Agt. During his tenure, he implemented significant economic reforms, including austerity measures and tax cuts. Lubbers also oversaw the Netherlands' entry into the European Monetary Union (EMU).
International Role
Lubbers played an active role in international affairs. He was a close ally of German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and French President François Mitterrand, and together they formed the "European triumvirate" that shaped European politics in the late 20th century. Lubbers also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2001 to 2005.
